Trump meets with Lebanon’s president as Iran and US keep up a 10th day of attacks
AP News-July21,2026
Here’s what we’re following:
- U.S. President Donald Trump is hosting Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the White House. The landmark meeting comes as Lebanon and Israel continue rare direct talks mediated by Washington in a bid to bring about long-term calm in Lebanon after months of war between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group.
- Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, meanwhile, is meeting with mediators in Pakistan in an attempt to salvage the collapsed interim deal between the U.S. and Iran. However, it remains unclear just what new arrangement could be reached to end the fighting.
- The two countries have continued trading strikes for the past 10 days. Iran attacked a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz early Tuesday, forcing its crew to abandon the ship, while the United States conducted yet another round of airstrikes targeting the Islamic Republic.
- The U.S. military on Tuesday identified an American soldier killed disarming a drone in Iraq as Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of North Carolina. A day earlier, the military identified two U.S. soldiers killed in Jordan while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. Seventeen U.S. troops have been killed since the start of the war, and Trump warned Monday that “every time Iran kills an American Soldier” going forward, “they will pay for that killing many times over.”
- On Tuesday afternoon, the Senate will review Trump’s $87.6 billion supplemental funding request, mostly to cover the costs of the war. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. John Caine are expected to testify.
Trump says he’ll pay his respects to fallen service members at Dover
The president is expected to attend the dignified transfer on Wednesday. It’s a ritual considered to be one of the most somber duties of the commander-in-chief.
“I’ll be going to Dover for something that I feel is — it’s a great honor for me to do it,” Trump told reporters.
Two soldiers killed in Iranian missile and drone attacks in Jordan will be returned during the dignified transfer, according to an administration official speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.
The remains of another soldier killed in Iraq during a detonation of an Iranian drone will also be returned, the official said, as well as a fourth service member whose remains have not yet been identified but who is believed to be a soldier missing after the Jordan attacks.
