A Warning to the Devotees of Power:

When Power Unmasks Itself

To those who have pinned their hopes on names and faces, turning political stars into the
compass of their aspirations; from the radical left to the far right, from the most
revolutionary freedom fighters to the staunchest defenders of law and order, and from
those who cry out for justice to those who march under the banner of democracy and
human rights: beware the day your idols ascend to the throne of power unchecked
and unsupervised.
Power is less a test for the people than it is for those who wield it. History has shown time
and again that many individuals and movements speak of liberty, justice, human dignity,
and popular rights only so long as they remain on the fringes. Yet, the moment they take
the reins of governance, they make those very ideals the first casualties of their own
survival.
The Unforgiving Cycle of Unchecked Authority
History knows few exceptions to this rule. Those who once rose up with the slogan of
human liberation have often transformed into the jailers of the very people they sought to
free. Those who championed democracy, pluralism, and human rights have, upon seizing
authority, severed the tongues of dissent and shackled free thought. This trajectory is
confined neither to a specific ideology, nor to a religion, a nation, or an era. It is the very
nature of power itself, repeating its grim cycle.
From the French and Russian Revolutions to the Iranian Revolution and the rise of
National Socialism in Germany—among hundreds of other examples—history has
repeatedly demonstrated how power, when liberated from oversight, transforms the
noblest ideals into instruments of domination. The difference lies only in the names, the
flags, and the slogans; the mechanics of power remain largely identical.
The problem lies not merely in the individuals, but in the essence of power itself. If power
is not restrained by law, oversight, transparency, the peaceful transition of authority, and
accountability, it gradually perceives itself as above the law. In such a state, leaders begin
to view themselves as the embodiment of truth, critics are cast as enemies, and the
interests of the regime supplant the interests of the people.
Institutions Over Idols
Consequently, no individual should be deemed sacred. No charismatic leader should be
placed beyond the reach of criticism. No party, organization, or movement should be
immune to public scrutiny, and no ideal should become so sacrosanct that human liberty is
sacrificed in its name.
Democracy requires robust institutions far more than it requires "good" leaders. It
demands:
 Laws that bind everyone equally.
 A free and independent press.
 An autonomous judiciary.
 A vibrant civil society.
 Citizens who refuse to be infatuated by personalities, remaining instead the
guardians of principles.
The greatest threat to any society is not the sudden rise of a tyrant, but the willingness of
the people to unconditionally surrender their destiny to a "savior." Whenever critique gives

way to adulation, and questioning yields to blind obedience, the first steps toward tyranny
have been taken—even if that tyranny still wears the garments of freedom.
The Path Forward
Therefore, let us guard principles rather than worship personalities. Let us demand
accountability instead of granting absolute trust. And instead of constructing political idols,
let us build institutions that ensure no one can place themselves above the law. The future
of Iran will be forged not by heroes, but by institutions that restrain power and hold rulers
accountable.
If power is not continuously subjected to the vigilant gaze of the public, it will, sooner or
later, unveil its true and formidable face. History has ruthlessly taught humanity this truth
time and again.
Whether we will tread that worn path once more, or finally learn from the trials of those
who came before us, depends entirely on the choices we make today.

هشدار به شیفتگانِ قدرت؛

 آنگاه که “قدرت” نقاب‌ها را کنار می‌زند

ای آنان که دل در گروِ نام‌ها و چهره‌ها نهاده‌اید و ستارگانِ سیاست را قبله‌ی امیدهای خویش ساخته‌اید؛ از چپِ رادیکال تا راستِ افراطی، از انقلابی‌ترین آزادی‌خواهان تا سرسخت‌ترین مدافعانِ نظم و اقتدار، از آنان که عدالت را فریاد می‌زنید تا آنان که دموکراسی و حقوق بشر را پرچم خویش ساخته‌‌اید؛ از روزی بترسید که محبوبان شما بی‌هیچ مهار و نظارتی بر اریکه‌ی قدرت بنشینند.

قدرت، بیش از آنکه آزمونی برای مردم باشد، آزمونی برای دارندگان آن است. تاریخ بارها نشان داده که بسیاری از انسان‌ها و جریان‌ها، تا زمانی که در حاشیه‌اند، از آزادی، عدالت، کرامت انسان و حقوق مردم سخن می‌گویند؛ اما آنگاه که زمام امور را در دست می‌گیرند، همان آرمان‌ها را نخستین قربانی بقای خویش می‌سازند.

تاریخ در این باب استثناهای اندکی می‌شناسد. آنان که روزی با شعار رهایی مردم برخاستند، گاه خود به زندانبانان همان مردم بدل شدند. آنان که از دموکراسی، تکثر و حقوق بشر سخن می‌گفتند، در روز اقتدار، زبان مخالف را بریدند و اندیشه را به بند کشیدند. این سرگذشت، نه به ایدئولوژی‌ای محدود است، نه به دینی، نه به ملتی و نه به دورانی. این سرشتِ خودِ قدرت است که این‌گونه تکرار می‌شود.

از انقلاب فرانسه تا انقلاب روسیه، از انقلاب ایران تا قدرت‌گیری ناسیونال‌سوسیالیسم در آلمان، و در صدها نمونه‌ دیگر، تاریخ بارها نشان داده است که قدرتِ رها از نظارت، چگونه می‌تواند شریف‌ترین آرمان‌ها را به ابزار سلطه بدل کند. تفاوت تنها در نام‌ها، پرچم‌ها و شعارهاست؛ سازوکار قدرت، اغلب همان است.

مشکل، تنها در اشخاص نیست؛ در ماهیت قدرت نیز هست. قدرت، اگر با قانون، نظارت، شفافیت، گردش مسالمت‌آمیز قدرت و پاسخ‌گویی مهار نشود، آرام‌آرام خویش را برتر از قانون می‌پندارد. در چنین وضعی، رهبران کم‌کم خود را تجسم حقیقت می‌بینند، منتقدان به دشمن بدل می‌شوند و منافع حکومت جای منافع مردم را می‌گیرد.

از همین رو، هیچ فردی نباید مقدس شمرده شود؛ هیچ رهبر کاریزماتیکی نباید فراتر از نقد قرار گیرد؛ هیچ حزب، سازمان یا جنبشی نباید از نظارت عمومی مصون باشد؛ و هیچ آرمانی نباید چنان مقدس گردد که به نام آن آزادی انسان قربانی شود.

دموکراسی، بیش از آنکه به رهبران خوب نیاز داشته باشد، به نهادهای خوب نیازمند است؛ به قوانینی که همه را مقید سازد؛ به رسانه‌های آزاد؛ به قوه‌ی قضائیه‌ی مستقل؛ به جامعه‌ی مدنی نیرومند؛ و به شهروندانی که شیفته‌ی چهره‌ها نشوند، بلکه پاسدار اصول بمانند.

بزرگ‌ترین خطری که هر جامعه را تهدید می‌کند، نه ظهور یک مستبد، بلکه آمادگی مردم برای سپردن بی‌چون‌وچرای سرنوشت خویش به دست یک «منجی» است. هرگاه نقد جای خود را به ستایش، و پرسش جای خود را به اطاعت بدهد، نخستین گام‌های استبداد برداشته شده است؛ حتی اگر هنوز جامه‌ی آزادی بر تن داشته باشد.

پس بیایید به جای پرستش اشخاص، از اصول پاسداری کنیم؛ به جای اعتماد مطلق، مطالبه‌ی پاسخ‌گویی داشته باشیم؛ و به جای ساختن بت‌های سیاسی، نهادهایی بسازیم که هیچ‌کس نتواند خود را فراتر از قانون بداند. آینده‌ی ایران نه با قهرمانان، بلکه با نهادهایی ساخته خواهد شد که قدرت را مهار و حاکمان را پاسخ‌گو کنند.

قدرت، اگر پیوسته زیر نگاه بیدار مردم نباشد، دیر یا زود چهره‌ی واقعی و سهمگین خویش را آشکار خواهد کرد. تاریخ، بی‌رحمانه این حقیقت را بارها به انسان آموخته است.

این‌که آیا بار دیگر همان راه را خواهیم رفت، یا از تجربه‌ی گذشتگان درس خواهیم گرفت، به انتخاب امروز ما بستگی دارد.
