Iran war live: Trump threatens Iran to ‘get smart soon’ amid stalled talks

Al Jazeera-April29th2026

By Stephen Quillen and Umut Uras

  • In a new social media post, US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran to “better get smart soon” as efforts by Washington and Tehran to end hostilities appeared at a standstill.
  • Israel has killed at least seven people, including emergency workers and soldiers, in southern Lebanon.
  • Iran’s currency has dropped to a record low of 1,810,000 rials to the US dollar, the Iranian Student News Agency says.
  • Gulf leaders have met in Saudi Arabia and say Iran must take “the initiative to make serious efforts to rebuild confidence” after “treacherous” attacks on the region.

  • Iranian official says ‘war not a solution’ amid stalemate in US talks

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh says war is not a solution to resolve the ongoing crisis, adding that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward amid a stalemate in talks.

“War is not a solution. It is part of the problem,” Khatibzadeh said, stressing that all alternatives to diplomacy are “unattractive”.

For weeks, Khatibzadeh said, Iran has put forward proposals to end the war through negotiations based on “equal terms and conditions”.

US, Iran ‘haven’t changed core positions much’: Analyst

Talks between the US and Iran appear to have “stalled” as both sides refuse to budge in negotiations and Iran attempts to decouple the Strait of Hormuz issue from its nuclear programme, says Alexandru Hudisteanu, a military and diplomatic analyst.

“I don’t think the US and Iran have changed their core positions too much,” he told Al Jazeera. “The US still wants Iran to change its behaviour now, for some benefit later, while Iran wants to have the benefits now in return for the discussion about its behaviour later, especially [regarding] a nuclear deal.”

Hudisteanu said the US and Iran seem to have contained their confrontation to the maritime domain, reducing any risk of severe miscalculation.

“The maritime space has become the only space in which military action can happen, and even there it is limited.”
