The Crickets Chirp Incessantly
Majid Naficy
In this forest house in Waynesville
Crickets chirp incessantly
But I don’t find my cricket among them,
The same cricket that in my adolescence
In the backyard of our house in Isfahan
Invited me to the night
And harbingered that every day love would be there.
I go to the balcony and shout
And throw a piece of wood
Toward the trees.
But the crickets chirp as before.
Their chorus sounds like a deafening silence.
I detest this mass of unison
And cover my ears
To hear the voice of my lonely cricket.
