The 14 signers of the letter consisted of women serving as city council members, state legislators, and Democratic Party delegates, including Rep. Yassamin Ansari of Arizona, the first Iranian American Democrat elected to Congress.

Women have been at the forefront of demonstrations against the Iranian government in recent years, including the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests of 2022 that were met with a deadly crackdown. We, a group of Iranian American women in political leadership from across the United States of America, speak in one voice at a moment of deep urgency for our motherland, Iran, and the Iranian people.

For decades, Iranians living under the Islamic Republic have led the struggle for equality, freedom, and democratic accountability. Opposition to the regime’s repression is grounded in their lived experience, shaped by 47 plus years of censorship, imprisonment, executions, mass murder, and the denial of basic fundamental freedoms. The call for change in Iran emerges from grassroots movements within its borders and is sustained by generations committed to an Iran rooted in national identity and culture, human rights, freedom, justice, and the rule of law.  We stand with the people of Iran in their struggle for freedom, secular democracy, adherence to the full scope of human rights doctrine, and a desire for economic growth and connectivity with the global community.

At the same time, we unequivocally reject any foreign intervention and oppose any illegal war framed as “military operation”, condemn the bombing of Iran, unequivocally oppose all attacks on civilian targets by any side, and further military escalation that may include boots on the ground and land invasion, and reject calls for war, and proposals by political leaders who claim that violence can bring liberation. In recent weeks, coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, framed by Trump and his hawkish administration as advancing “regime change,” and fighting a “religious war,” have reportedly caused death, destruction, and civilian harm. Pete Hegseth, Secretary of War,  has used Pentagon worship services and public appearances to cast the war against Iran as a “Christian crusade” or “holy war.”

The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment prevents the state from endorsing a particular religious worldview as the basis for public policy or military action.  Under Article 2(4) of the Charter of the United Nations, states must refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of another state absent lawful justification; and international humanitarian law prohibits direct attacks on civilians and civilian objects, and requires proportionality and precautions in attack.

As reported by the News and international observers, the U.S. and Israel have carried out attacks in Iran that are causing grave civilian harm, environmental and health catastrophe, and raising urgent concerns under international law. There has been devastating and documented damage to residential neighborhoods, schools, healthcare infrastructure, bridges, and cultural heritage sites – including locations recognized by UNESCO for their historical significance – alongside significant civilian casualties, with death toll estimates exceeding 3,500 people and millions displaced within the country.  Retaliation by the Islamic Republic has also resulted in significant damage and loss of lives in Israel and the neighboring countries, and at least 13 members of the US Army have been lost, and many have been injured.

We believe democracy cannot be delivered through missiles, and freedom cannot emerge from destruction and more death of innocent lives. War would not empower the Iranian people; it would endanger civilians, weaken civil society, lead to a tsunami of arbitrary arrests and imprisonments, increase the rate of executions, and strengthen authoritarian forces that thrive on fear and conflict.

The Iranian people must not become casualties of geopolitical rivalry or instruments of foreign agendas. We refuse the false choice between repression at home and devastation from abroad. Both deny Iranians the right to determine their own future.

We call on the international community to stand with the Iranian people through principled support for human rights, diplomacy, and peaceful engagement — not through policies that punish civilians or escalate violence. True solidarity means listening to the unifying demands of the Iranian people and engaging with those who continue to lead movements for change despite immense risk.

Our position is clear:

• We support an immediate end to the bombing and violence impacting civilians in Iran and neighboring countries, as well as an end to foreign military intervention.

• We condemn threats of potential use of nuclear weapons against Iran as reported.

• We urge those facilitating a diplomatic negotiation to insist that the Islamic Republic release all political prisoners and immediately cease all executions in Iran to demonstrate good faith in the path to peace and stability in the region.

• We oppose authoritarian rule in Iran and support democratic change led peacefully by the Iranian people themselves, without foreign intervention.

• We condemn advocating for physical war in the name of religion as a direct contradiction to the US Constitution and the doctrine of separation of Church and State, and call on Congress to exercise its constitutional war powers to stop unauthorized war against Iran.

• We urge Congress to reject proposals that dramatically expand Pentagon spending and additional military aid tied to further escalation when such funds are desperately needed to support urgent community needs.

• We reject any attempts by the Trump administration to assert claims against Iran’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, particularly attempts to seize the Strait of Hormuz, Kharq Island, Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, Qeshm, and Larak.

Freedom, sovereignty, and peace are inseparable. Iran’s future must be shaped by its citizens — not imposed through force, and not written in war.

We stand for an Iran that is free, sovereign, just, and prospering.

این ائتلاف خواستار پایان فوری جنگ، حفاظت از غیرنظامیان و نظارت کنگره است.

ما، گروهی از زنان ایرانی آمریکایی منتخب و فعال در سیاست از سراسر ایالات متحده آمریکا، در این برهه حساس و بسیار ضروری برای سرزمین مادری‌مان، ایران، و مردم ایران، یکصدا سخن می‌گوییم.

ایرانیانی که تحت حاکمیت جمهوری اسلامی زندگی می‌کنند، دهه‌هاست که مبارزه برای برابری، آزادی و پاسخگویی دموکراتیک را دنبال کرده‌اند. مخالفت با سرکوب رژیم، ریشه در تجربه زیسته آنها دارد که با بیش از ۴۷ سال سانسور، زندان، اعدام، قتل عام و محرومیت از آزادی‌های اساسی شکل گرفته است. تقاضا برای تغییر در ایران از جنبش‌های مردمی درون مرزهای آن سرچشمه می‌گیرد و توسط نسل‌هایی که به ایرانی ریشه‌دار در هویت و فرهنگ ملی، حقوق بشر، آزادی، عدالت و حاکمیت قانون متعهد هستند، تداوم می‌یابد. ما در کنار مردم ایران در مبارزه آنها برای آزادی، دموکراسی سکولار، پایبندی به تمام اصول حقوق بشر و تمایل به رشد اقتصادی و ارتباط با جامعه جهانی ایستاده‌ایم.

در عین حال، ما قاطعانه هرگونه مداخله خارجی را رد می‌کنیم و با هرگونه جنگ غیرقانونی که به عنوان «عملیات نظامی» مطرح شود، مخالفیم، بمباران ایران را محکوم می‌کنیم، قاطعانه با هرگونه حمله به اهداف غیرنظامی توسط هر طرف و تشدید نظامی بیشتر که ممکن است شامل حضور نظامی زمینی و تهاجم زمینی باشد، مخالفیم و درخواست‌ برای جنگ و پیشنهادات رهبران سیاسی را که ادعا می‌کنند خشونت می‌تواند آزادی را به ارمغان بیاورد، رد می‌کنیم. در هفته‌های اخیر، حملات هماهنگ ایالات متحده و اسرائیل به ایران، که توسط ترامپ و دولت جنگ‌طلب او به عناوینی چون پیشبرد برای «تغییر رژیم» یا «جنگ مذهبی» مطرح شده است، طبق گزارش‌ها، باعث مرگ، ویرانی و آسیب به غیرنظامیان شده است. پیت هگزت، وزیر جنگ آمریکا، از مراسم پرستش در پنتاگون و حضور در ملاء عام استفاده کرده است تا جنگ علیه ایران را به عنوان «جنگ صلیبی مسیحی» یا «جنگ مقدس» جلوه دهد.

بند مربوط به تاسیس در متمم اول قانون اساسی، دولت را از تأیید یک جهان‌بینی مذهبی خاص به عنوان مبنای سیاست عمومی یا اقدام نظامی باز می‌دارد. طبق ماده 2(4) منشور سازمان ملل متحد، دولت‌ها باید از تهدید یا استفاده از زور علیه تمامیت ارضی یا استقلال سیاسی کشور دیگر، بدون توجیه قانونی، خودداری کنند؛ و حقوق بین‌الملل بشردوستانه حملات مستقیم به غیرنظامیان و اهداف غیرنظامی را ممنوع کرده و تناسب و اقدامات احتیاطی را در حمله الزامی می‌داند.

همانطور که توسط خبرگزاری‌ها و ناظران بین‌المللی گزارش شده است، ایالات متحده و اسرائیل حملاتی را در ایران انجام داده‌اند که باعث آسیب‌های جدی به غیرنظامیان، فاجعه زیست‌محیطی و بهداشتی شده و نگرانی‌های فوری را در مورد نقض قوانین بین‌المللی برانگیخته است. خسارات به محله‌های مسکونی، مدارس، زیرساخت‌های مراقبت‌های بهداشتی، پل‌ها و اماکن میراث فرهنگی – از جمله مکان‌هایی که به دلیل اهمیت تاریخی توسط یونسکو به رسمیت شناخته شده‌اند – در کنار تلفات قابل توجه غیرنظامیان، با تخمین تلفات بیش از ۳۵۰۰ نفر و میلیون‌ها آواره در داخل کشور، مستند شده است. اقدامات تلافی‌جویانه جمهوری اسلامی نیز منجر به خسارات و تلفات قابل توجهی در اسرائیل و کشورهای همسایه شده است و حداقل ۱۳ عضو ارتش ایالات متحده کشته و بسیاری زخمی شده‌اند.

ما معتقدیم که دموکراسی را نمی‌توان از طریق موشک‌ها برقرار کرد، و آزادی نمی‌تواند از ویرانی و مرگ بیشتر بی‌گناهان پدید آید. جنگ مردم ایران را توانمند نخواهد کرد؛ بلکه غیرنظامیان را به خطر می‌اندازد، جامعه مدنی را تضعیف می‌کند، منجر به سونامی دستگیری‌ها و حبس‌های خودسرانه می‌شود، میزان اعدام‌ها را افزایش می‌دهد و نیروهای اقتدارگرایی را که از ترس و درگیری تغذیه می‌کنند، تقویت می‌کند.

مردم ایران نباید قربانی رقابت‌های ژئوپلیتیکی یا ابزار برنامه‌های خارجی شوند. ما انتخاب نادرست بین سرکوب در داخل و ویرانی از خارج را رد می‌کنیم. هر دو، حق ایرانیان برای تعیین آینده خود را انکار می‌کنند.

ما از جامعه بین‌المللی می‌خواهیم که از طریق حمایت اصولی از حقوق بشر، دیپلماسی و تعامل مسالمت‌آمیز در کنار مردم ایران بایستند – نه از طریق سیاست‌هایی که غیرنظامیان را مجازات می‌کند یا خشونت را تشدید می‌کند. همبستگی واقعی به این‌ معنی است که به خواسته‌های متحد مردم ایران گوش دهید و با کسانی است که علیرغم خطرات عظیم، همچنان جنبش‌های تغییر را رهبری می‌کنند، تعامل کنید.

مواضع ما روشن است:

• ما از پایان فوری بمباران و خشونت علیه غیرنظامیان در ایران و کشورهای همسایه، و همچنین پایان مداخله نظامی خارجی حمایت می‌کنیم.

• ما تهدیدهای استفاده احتمالی از سلاح‌های هسته‌ای علیه ایران را، همانطور که گزارش شده است، محکوم می‌کنیم.

• ما از کسانی که مذاکرات دیپلماتیک را تسهیل می‌کنند، می‌خواهیم که اصرار داشته باشند جمهوری اسلامی همه زندانیان سیاسی را آزاد کند و فوراً همه اعدام‌ها را در ایران متوقف کند تا حسن نیت خود را در مسیر صلح و ثبات در منطقه نشان دهد.

• ما با حکومت استبدادی در ایران مخالفیم و از تغییرات دموکراتیک به رهبری مسالمت‌آمیز خود مردم ایران، بدون دخالت خارجی، حمایت می‌کنیم.

• ما طرفداری از جنگ فیزیکی به نام دین را به عنوان مغایرت مستقیم با قانون اساسی ایالات متحده و اصل جدایی دین و دولت محکوم می‌کنیم، و از کنگره می‌خواهیم که از اختیارات جنگی قانون اساسی خود برای توقف جنگ غیرمجاز علیه ایران استفاده کند.

• ما از کنگره می‌خواهیم درخواست هایی که هزینه‌های پنتاگون و کمک‌های نظامی اضافی مرتبط با تشدید بیشتر اوضاع را به طرز چشمگیری افزایش می‌دهد، را رد کند، در حالی که چنین بودجه‌هایی برای حمایت از نیازهای فوری جامعه آمریکا به شدت مورد نیاز است.

• ما هرگونه تلاش دولت ترامپ برای طرح ادعاهایی علیه تمامیت ارضی و حاکمیت ایران، به ویژه تلاش برای تصرف تنگه هرمز، جزیره خارک، ابوموسی، تنب بزرگ، تنب کوچک، قشم و لارک را رد می‌کنیم.

آزادی، حاکمیت و صلح از هم جدایی‌ ناپذیرند. آینده ایران باید توسط شهروندانش شکل گیرد – نه از طریق زور تحمیل شود و نه در جنگ نوشته شود.

ما از ایرانی آزاد، مستقل، عادل و مرفه حمایت می‌کنیم.
